Getting to Altay (it's worth it)
Altay is a five-hour flight-chain from eastern China, and that distance is exactly why the snow stays untracked. Here's the route, honestly, including the ways it goes wrong.
1Fly to Urumqi, then onward
Urumqi (URC) is the hub, with direct flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and most major cities (4.5–5.5 hrs from the east coast). From Urumqi, take the ~1 hr hop to Altay (AAT) for Jiangjunshan and the Hemu/Jikepulin transfer, or to Fuyun (FYN) for Keketuohai. A seasonal airport at Burqin/Kanas (KJI) sometimes serves winter routes — check current schedules rather than planning around it. Book domestic legs on Trip.com — same inventory as Chinese OTAs, in English.
2The road transfer
From Altay city: Jiangjunshan is a 10-minute taxi. Hemu village and Jikepulin are a 2.5–4 hour drive depending on weather and checkpoints; Keketuohai is ~1 hr from Fuyun airport. Roads are plowed and the drive is spectacular, but storms close passes for hours, occasionally a day. Don't self-drive in winter — arrange a transfer through your guesthouse or a local operator (bookable only in Chinese; this is a thing we handle).
3The buffer-day rule
Build one spare day into each direction. The common trip-wrecker isn't the skiing or the cold — it's a delayed Urumqi connection cascading into a missed transfer and a lost powder day. With a buffer day you lose nothing; without one you're rebooking flights in a language you don't read.
Travel insurance that covers delays and winter sports is cheap peace of mind — SafetyWing is the usual pick for independent travellers (check their winter sports terms for off-piste).
A sane first Altay itinerary
Day 1: arrive Urumqi, overnight. Day 2: fly to Altay, afternoon/night ski at Jiangjunshan. Days 3–6: transfer to Hemu, ski Jikepulin. Day 7: buffer/return to Altay. Day 8: fly out. That's the shape of the trip we quote most — see the Jikepulin guide for what you're coming for.
Altay is where the concierge earns it
Flight chains, winter road transfers, guesthouses that only book through WeChat — this is the trip we built the Full Concierge for.
