When to ski China

Short version: January and February for snow quality everywhere, December for Altay powder with fewer people, March for warmth and deals — and one giant red flag in early February 2027.

⚠ Avoid if you can: Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027 (Year of the Goat). Expect the official holiday week around 5–12 February — the final dates come in the State Council's holiday notice, usually published in November/December 2026 — with heavy domestic travel running through the Lantern Festival on 20 February. Every resort in China is at its most crowded and most expensive, hotels triple, and transport sells out. If those are your only dates, book months ahead and expect queues; any other week of February is dramatically calmer.

Snowmaking means reliable corduroy all season; Jan–Feb coldest and best. Wanlong stretches to mid-April.

Altay

Jiangjunshan opens late Oct; deep-winter cold smoke Dec–Feb; Keketuohai claims turns into May.

Northeast

Natural snow peaks Dec–Jan; January is brutally cold (−20 °C and below) — March is the comfort pick.

Sichuan (Xiling)

Shortest season, humid-climate snow; mid-Dec to early Mar only, and check conditions before driving up.

Ratings reflect typical season patterns from published season dates and climate, not a forecast — weather varies year to year. "Best" = coldest, most reliable snow; "Early/Late" = open but partial terrain or variable cover.
